Tis my essay on the first volume of Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s comic about Britpop. The author RT’d it with a nice note! Now I’m really feeling the pressure to write something good about the second volume, haha.
Extra shout-out to Minimoonstar for most of the discussion points!

19 Feb 2013(CNN) — Films such as “Django Unchained” carry with them an uncommonly high concentration of influence and opportunity. Due to the scarcity of diverse and inspiring representations on screen, Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie casts a longer shadow than many are willing to acknowledge.
Meanwhile, in the land of people who watched the same movie and came to a very different conclusion.

Oh yeah, and I wrote this article for The Hooded Utilitarian about the sound theoretical underpinnings of Quentin Tarantino’s anti-slavery genre flick.
I’m currently writing an article about Phonogram as it’s the only non-manga comic I read this year and feel moderately-qualified to talk about, aha (thanks Sabina!).

I wrote about Death Note, Bakuman, sexism, and misogyny.
Here’s the index of hate. Other “hate” articles I’ve really liked are this one and this one on Euro comics; this one and this one on indie comics; this one and this one on mainstream superhero comics; this one and this one on niche superhero comics; this one and this one on autobiographical comics; this one and this one on manga; and, saving the best for last, Shannon Garrity on everything.

Bang Yong Guk, of Going Crazy fame, says:
I was born in a hospital in Incheon on March 31st, 1990. I’m the youngest out of two sons and one daughter in our family. When my mother was pregnant with me, she said she had a precognitive dream about me… there was a really high sluice that gated the ocean and when the sluice opened, the ocean water seeped through and only sand was left but in it were two clams. The fans who caught on early might know that I have an identical twin. Of course, my older twin brother and I both look alike and the way we talk is alike as well…
I learned how to speak really late. I couldn’t speak till I was 5 so my family thought I was mute. Because of how I was, there were a lot of people who were deeply concerned about me and I played a lot during my younger days, I was also a kid who received a lot of awards when I was in kindergarten. I received a lot of awards in competitions like children’s arts or math competitions. My older brother always placed 1st and I was always 2nd though.
This explains why Himchan was the “commander” for the first 8 episodes of BAP’s reality TV show, no? (Episode 9) Also all you Yongguk/Himchan slashers out there, I hope you realize this is (band) incest. :p
(However here’s a bonus video of the two of them performing BYG, “Sexy Club” at an underground club pre-debut. Finally, here’s BAP’s new single, Power.)

I put my review on Dreamwidth so people could leave comments. Short version: it’s fun and character driven, the pacing is nuts and the script is smarter than it needed to be. Longer version: read the post!

Since I’m getting a marginal amount of encouragement, I’m just going to keep making these Big Bang posts. :p
There is a sexual politics of Big Bang embedded in the “Blue” MV (following from the idea that the video is shot so that GDragon/the other members of Big Bang both *are* the girl and *are with* the girl - and also that GD has, at one point or another, wanted to sleep with all of them):
While I like looking for hidden messages as much as the next person (okay, more XD), I think the psychology behind this kind of obsessive messaging - assuming it is really there, and why wouldn’t it be? it’s what the fans want to know - is really dark, actually; and also more interesting than “did they really sleep together” (which is none of my business anyway).
On that note, here’s a live performance of Breathe where a bunch of faceless people are trying to push their way to GDragon’s bed. The MV is kinda disturbing, too: child-actor boyish charm + seductiveness, and again the bed is the center of attention (surrounded by musical notes!). Also, dude once again has that crazy gleam in his eyes. >_> I wonder how they get the mood right for these shots. Extra serving of ramyeon in the morning? Filming at a certain time of day? Or is GD like Avengers-movie Bruce Banner, and (spoilers) “always angry”?
Or in other words: still not a conspiracy theorist, etc. Actually at this point I’m pretty convinced that “truth” is a slippery concept which is co-created by BB and their fans (and YG Entertainment): If the fans think it’s a good idea, sooner or later GDragon thinks it’s a good idea; and if the production company doesn’t intervene (or enables), sooner or later it happens. Or something like that.

Arboretum and Sabina already know my theory about GD (of Big Bang)’s obsession with gender(fuckery), which you can see most clearly in the MV for “Blue” (the members of Big Bang both *are* the girl and *are with* the girl).
This hat is part of a “boy” themed clothing set everyone else except GD wears in some of their stage shows. (EDIT: Though he’s worn the “boy” stuff on at least one occasion, so if there is a message it’s not a consistant one… BTW here’s the first time Big Bang wore this line, almost a year ago.) (This post originally linked to Preeya Kalidas singing an RnB song in that hat, but the video was taken down. Here is the song, though.)
Sabina also knows my thoughts about the the Bad Boy/Good Girl hat in BB’s “Bad Boy” MV, although considering that Taeyang and GDragon share this hat (in the MV as well as in interviews), an alternate interpretation could be that one of them is the “Bay Boy” and the other is the “Good Girl” (or vice versa). Anyway, just some thoughts XD.
