Wonder Girls - K-Food Party

The most amusing thing I came across today! So this song was used to promote Korean agricultural food export a couple years ago. Oh yeah, I’ll be k-swagging it LOL!

MAKE THE SMART CHOICE

Heh. There’s actually a bunch of these. My favorite is Electroboyz & Bigstar on K-Food Day - in English!  Also, the curious coincidence of Jay Park’s I Like It (cheesy parody) vs. Jay Park’s I Like It (RnB single).

Spring Arrives 2013

I made Koganbot a list of my top singles of 2013, and then I made a playlist. It’s mostly K-hip hop, with some pop and RnB.  Lots of triumphant piano, strings and horns combined with modern pulse-raising music technologies for a spring-like feeling… or something like that, XD.

Kpop Hearts the 80s II: Nonstop Exercise Mix

Not entirely Kpop, not entirely 80s, and there are a couple stops and starts. I do use it for exercise, though!

Nine Muses should probably be something else with a faster tempo, and it does get very cheesy and distraught-boyband-y in the middle.  But, well…

The Woman in the Red Dress (mix)

Just a spur of the moment thing.  It’s a mix of Kpop singles ft. women in red dresses.  Plus a couple boyband songs that prominently feature the color red, just because.

Was tempted to also include Roh Ji Hoon - Punishment, but the woman in the video doesn’t wear a red dress, and in the live performance where Roh Ji Hoon is wearing a red suit, he’s off-key.

My 2012 in Review

Happy 2013, everyone!

"Christmas" "RnB" "2012"

I fixed my “Christmas” RnB playlist.  It’s easier listening now, though still not as easy as a playlist made up of only actual Christmas songs would have been.

It’s also kind of long (32 songs and 2 hours) and there’s lots of stuff I could have cut out, but I figured it was okay to keep them in since it’s meant to play mostly in the background anyway.

Happy Holidays!

Grimes, Perfume, La Roux and T-ara Soundtrack the 80s

Otherwise known as Kpop Hearts the 80s II: Indie Eighties Strike Back.

In other news, I was at the Big Bang concert at the Prudential Center last night.  Chrissie’s account is here, mine is still on paper but I’ll probably type it up soon.  It wasn’t a transformative event or anything, but it was a very good, very professional show, and the crowd was i-n-s-a-n-e.  As Chrissie mentions, our seats got upgraded at the last minute from mezzanine to about 30 feet from the stage. Pretty cool!

Also, I am now an official columnist at The Hooded Utilitarian! I decided to kick off my column with a (very messy) article on Gangnam Style: right here. If you spot any mistakes or broken links, please let me know, I am still finding them a week later ^^

Music is a Fast Car (Kpop Italodisco Retrospective) (mix)

Because Sabina mentioned Initial D and 4minute returned to their old style.

Quick mix just for fun. It’s not really “italodisco” all the way through.

EDIT: Grrr tumblr putting span tags around the “&” symbols in the Youtube link! For the actual playlist go here.

Summer Pop, Take 2 (mix)

Unlike the last two, I spent quite a bit of time on this.  You probably can’t tell, though, haha.

Last BAP single had a line about Picasso’s Guernica; this MV looks like it’s Damien Hirst-inspired. (Skulls, diamond-encrusted objects.) My guess is this has something to do with their intention, stated in the lyrics, of bypassing the usual Kpop routes to fame by appealing directly to their (overseas/worldwide) audience. There’s also a bit in the lyrics about how they refuse to be compared to other (copycat) artists.

From wikipedia

In September 2008, [Hirst] took an unprecedented move for a living artist[12] by selling a complete show, Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, at Sotheby’sby auction and by-passing his long-standing galleries.[13] The auction exceeded all predictions, raising £111 million ($198 million), breaking the record for a one-artist auction[14] as well as Hirst’s own record with £10.3 million for The Golden Calf, an animal with 18-carat gold horns and hooves, preserved in formaldehyde.[13]

This goes on the pile of “Kpop songs about not wanting to fall out of the public eye after reaching #1 on the charts” (with Infinite The Chaser and 4minute Volume Up).  Traditional drumming dance break is awesome, though I wonder what it means that the other big Kpop song with a drum break like that (2NE1’s I Am the Best) is ALSO totally megalomaniacal.
